“The same Torah which commands us to fast on Yom Kippur tells us that guarding our health is far more important than fasting on this holy day,” Chabad says. During the course of the holiday, a major component of the liturgy is the repeated communal confession of sins, the Viddui. It occurs annually on the 10th of Tishrei. The otherworldliness of the High Holidays is then channeled into the festive holidays of Sukkot and Simchat Torah, which bring the annual fall holiday season to a most joyous. On Yom Kippur, Yizkor, the memorial service, is recited, as is the Avodah, a symbolic reenactment of the ancient priestly ritual for Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur is the holiest day in Judaism and Samaritanism. However, as with all Jewish holidays marked by a fast (there are six in total), those with medical conditions are not expected to put themselves in danger by fasting. Yom Kippur 2023 begins before sundown on Sunday, September 24, and ends after nightfall on Monday, September 25. The fast occurs as part of the somber mood of the day of repentance. By extending the holiday for an extra hour, those observing can be sure that the fast aligns properly with the date. The timing of this fast differs from fasting during the Muslim month of Ramadan, when food can be consumed after sundown each night and before sunrise each day.įor Yom Kippur, which only occurs for one day, the fast is observed from sundown to sundown. Yom Kippur is characterized by a 25-hour fast. Those familiar with the Jewish faith may know that Shabbat, or the sabbath, lasts for 25 hours, too. The 25-hour observance on Yom Kippur allows a cushion of time for the subjectivity of “nightfall” as a moment in time, Chabad says. The fast lasts for 25 hours, rather than the typical 24 of a full day. 18, and ends at sundown on Wednesday, Sept. Yom Kippur begins at sundown on Tuesday, Sept. Will workers now be expected to fill their newly freed hours with ever more work or will technology finally fulfill its original promise of allowing us to lead more comfortable lives? Do we still need to work 40 hours a week when AI can work for us? TikTok’s fate up in the air in U.S. The new tech is now just baked in, under the hood, offering additional functionality to the end user. These enhancements to users’ everyday apps, from emails to docs to spreadsheets and more, will help to bring AI to mainstream users in a way that a ChatGPT-powered Bing alone cannot. In addition, Google is leveraging generative AI to create auto-generated images, audio, and video in Slides, which is an interesting angle on modern productivity - and, potentially, a threat to the one-off tools built to address each individual generative AI use case. Though the company hasn’t fully shared its vision for Chat - saying only that it will “enable workflows for getting things done” - it’s likely aiming to keep up with Microsoft’s plans. Google, meanwhile, said it would bring AI tools to Workspace, its productivity suite that includes Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Meet, Slides, and Chat. The company’s AI-powered writing suggestions are built on advanced GPT models, including GPT-4 (profiles) and GPT-3.5 (job descriptions). Microsoft, which calls its digital helper a “ Copilot,” is bringing AI to everyday tools like Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, and more. This week, in case you missed it, both Microsoft and Google announced the new generation of their productivity software products. It will no longer be enough to simply offer an elegant, refined, and efficient note-taking tool, docs editor, spreadsheet, slideshow maker, and so on - the apps will also need to have baked-in AI smarts. That is, they’re now raising the stakes for what a productivity app should be able to do. While the announcement wasn’t necessarily targeted toward mobile, the sweeping AI-fueled changes that are coming to the biggest productivity apps from Microsoft and Google will have a wider impact on the productivity app industry. If you have any further ideas on how I can get my photos to open more easily, I would appreciate it. Although I would prefer to open things via the normal path that is like Lightroom or Photoshop, as a workaround, now that I have found it, I suppose I can use that “Photos” folder as a way to access the photos that I want to work on with RT. I cleaned out all that excess junk from that Photos main folder and pasted in a Tiff photo from my Desktop. RT is able to open photos from that folder. I didn’t know I had this “Photos” main folder on my Mac and it is full of hundreds of all sorts of old Tiff, Jpeg, and DNG files - some going back as far as 20 years. That is NOT my external Photos drive but something within my Mac. That said, I also found that the other main folder is also called “Photos”. In Lightroom my Desktop photos will open but not in RT. So, I know I was following the correct path to get there. I checked the path through all the folders to make sure I was following it the same way as I would were I trying to access photos from Lightroom. One is the one with my name and it is from that main folder that I have been following the path through all the subfolders, trying to access my Desktop or the external Photos drive. Meanwhile, I discovered that there are two main folders that RT has access to. Unfortunately, RT was not listed among the apps that were in the list available to turn on or off, so that can’t be the problem. I am familiar with that problem from other applications. I thought you might be right so I checked into whether or not my Mac had disallowed RT from access to my photos. All I want to do is navigate to a 16 bit Tiff file, open it and make it bigger. I head about RAW Therapee from Mark Metternich who says it is by far the best interpolation software for enlarging fine-art photos for big prints. One of the recommended uses for RAW Therapee is to do interpolation from smaller files. All I can do is highlight the various folders and sometimes navigate into the various sub-folders but when I get to anywhere that photo files are kept, those sub-folders won’t open. I cannot navigate to any of the places where any of those are kept since nothing will open. I have RAW files, I have Tiff files, I have DNG files, Jpeg files, PNG files, and PSD files. Where else might I go to set Preferences?Īll I am trying to do is open ANY photo file I have. As to setting preferences:ġ.) There is no “Preferences” in a pull-down at the top underneath the “RAW Therapee-bin” next to the apple in the top left of the toolbar. I downloaded the latest version of RAW Therapee (Version 5.8) 64bit Mac from the RAW Therapee website, so I assume that is the most up to date, proper version. Free Download Free Download Main Features The classic lineup came together in 1958 with Dave and Paul, bassist Eugene Wright (who'd led his own band, The Dukes of Swing) and drummer Joe Morello (a former violinist who performed with The Boston Symphony Orchestra during his childhood). Drummer Joe Dodge contributed to these and Brubeck Time, a top seller in 1955. A prolific quartet of five (Crotty and Bob Bates alternated bass duties), Dave's band regularly put out three or four albums each year. It was a distinction that puzzled him, as he felt Duke Ellington deserved the distinction (Duke finally got his due in August 1956). Dave found himself on the cover of Time magazine the week of November 8, 1954, the second jazz artist to make the publication's cover ( Louis Armstrong had been first, in 1949). Leaving Fantasy in 1954, the quartet signed with Columbia Records and albums like Jazz Goes to College and Dave Brubeck at Storyville: 1954 sold above the levels of earlier efforts. Desmond and Brubeck started the Dave Brubeck Quartet, which would undergo a few changes in the bass and drum spots before the permanent band set themselves up to famously make history. Cal Tjader joined George Shearing's outfit on his way to making a name for himself. Several records were issued that year, most of them reconfigured versions of standards ( "Singin' in the Rain," "Body and Soul"), before the trio broke up. Then the Brubeck Trio landed with a new label, Fantasy, named after The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, which had begun in 1949 (at first they used the Fantasy mag's logo on record labels later, the company added Galaxy Records, named after another popular sci-fi magazine of the era). The trio made its recording debut in 1949 with a 78 RPM on the Coronet label, "Laura" backed with "Indiana." These and two other tracks (second single "Blue Moon" and "Tea For Two") were recorded in just a half hour, demonstrating the sort of excellence one might expect to hear at a live show, Dave's uniquely energetic piano work (particularly on the latter two selections) the selling point for jazz aficionados. Out of this experience grew the Dave Brubeck Trio, with drummer Tjader and bassist Ron Crotty. The band's public performances numbered just four: two 1946 concerts at Mills College, a gig opening for Woody Herman in San Francisco the following year and one final appearance in '48 at Dave's former college, the COP in Stockton (a number of recordings were made on acetate and were released in various forms a few years later). They rehearsed often, applying classical structure to the modern jazz style. In 1950, the Octet included Desmond and Brubeck, clarinetist and baritone saxophonist Bill Smith, tenor saxophonist David van Kriedt, trumpeter Dick Collins, trombonist Bob Collins, bassist Jack Weeks and a drummer that would one day be a major jazz star specializing in Latin percussion, Callen "Cal" Tjader. Eventually they became known as The Dave Brubeck Octet. At school, Dave became part of a cavalier bunch of student experimenters who called themselves "The 8." Like him, they were interested in stretching the rhythmic and harmonic boundaries of music, if for no other reason than to see where it might lead. Opportunities arose for him to sit in as pianist with a few San Francisco area jazz bands one was called The Three D's and sometimes featured alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, who'd been playing clubs around the area. After his discharge in the mid-'40s, he attended Mills College in Oakland and studied under French composer and teacher Darius Milhaud. He married another student, Iola Whitlock, while on leave shortly after he'd joined the Army in 1942. But a career in music seemed unlikely as he struggled through music courses, as a result of his vision, at the College of the Pacific in Stockton. As a result of some early eyesight problems, Dave never learned to properly read music, admitting to often "faking it."ĭave liked to alter the rhythms of songs when he played piano, sometimes catching the ire of musical purists. His mother, Bessie Brubeck, a former concert pianist, gave him piano lessons when he was a youngster. To fend off boredom he would make up melodies, using the rhythm of the ranch (galloping horses, the sounds of machinery and so on) as inspiration. During his teenage years he was a ranch hand, working for his father, Pete Brubeck, in the San Joaquin Valley. Born in 1920 in Concord, California, he possessed a natural rhythm. Musically speaking, timing was everything to Dave Brubeck. Chris Osgood, playing for the Detroit Red Wings, and Tim Thomas of the Boston Bruins are the only current NHL goaltenders to use this type of mask, the latter being the only one to use a helmet/cage combination specifically made for use by a goaltender. Dominik Hašek, a Hart Trophy and Vezina Trophy-winner in the late 1990s used this type of mask Hašek retired from the NHL in 2008. Dan Cloutier switched from this type of mask to the widely more popular full fiberglass citing safety reasons upon the advice of the Los Angeles Kings. Like the original fibreglass design, the helmet/cage combination has been criticized for not providing adequate facial/cranial protection. in the 1970s, a helmet/cage combination became popular, which was popularized by Vladislav Tretiak, the noted Russian goaltender who competed against Canada in the 1972 Summit Series. I used to get guys bringing me masks all the time with (Wizard of Oz) kind of stuff on them but I just like the way it is, just plain and simple." The Bauer NME Goalie Mask is solid, plain and simple. He's not going to change his equipment at this point. James of the Detroit Free Press asked the Wizard of Oz why he wears that archaic lid on his head, or why he at least doesn’t put a splash of paint on it. But I couldn’t work that into the story either.īut the most significant information that I couldn’t fit into the piece was Chris Osgood’s explanation for why he has no artwork on the vintage bucket-style headgear that he wears. I also found it interesting that Detroit-based artist Ray Bishop has painted masks for goalies in Sweden, Germany and the United Kingdom, and recently he received a mask from a goalie in South Korea. The Canucks were left without a captain when Markus Naslund signed a free-agent contract with the New York Rangers in the off-season."One of the interesting tales that I could not weave into the story was that mask designer Frank Cipra is such a skilled artist that he was able to paint a design on a micro-sized hearing aid for one of his buddies. Gillis sought clarification of the rule from NHL executives before naming Luongo captain. Luongo is not allowed to discuss calls with officials or participate in pre-game face-offs. More than half a century later, the NHL remains concerned that allowing a goaltender to perform traditional captain's duties will give a team unscheduled timeouts. It prohibits a goaltender from acting as a captain or alternate captain on the ice and wearing a C on his jersey. The Canucks broke tradition Tuesday by naming Luongo as their new captain, the first goaltender to receive the honour since Bill Durnan held the post for the Montreal Canadiens in 1947-48 61 seasons ago.ĭurnan's penchant for leaving his crease to talk to officials prompted the league to create a rule that is still in effect today. It is clearly separate from the mask's painted design and resembles the plain letter that a captain usually wears on a jersey. The dark blue C is located on the bottom of Luongo's mask in the area that protects his throat. "It can stand for whatever he wants it to stand for," said Canucks general manager Mike Gillis, when asked whether the C stood for Canucks or captain. Roberto Luongo found a way to stay within NHL rules but also let the world know he is the new captain of the Vancouver Canucks.įorbidden by the NHL from sporting the captain's "C" on his jersey because he is a goaltender, Luongo had the letter put on his mask for Sunday night's pre-season game against the visiting Anaheim Ducks.
